The story...

The Masonry Build method allows for the weatherproof shell of the house to be built very quickly.  Work can then start on the interior fit-out at the same time as the brickwork is being built up on the outside walls, shaving weeks off the build time.   This whole project was completed in less than a year.

Built in a hurry

The owners of a private, self-build project in Berkshire wanted their new four-bed detached home to be warm and energy efficient with the feel of feel of solid masonry; and they wanted it built quickly.

Their new home was to be built while the owners were based overseas. It was to be constructed on the site of their old home, which was demolished under the project. Their home’s designer and builder Revolution Homes, an H+H approved contractor, had no hesitation in recommending an aircrete and masonry solution based on H+H’s Thin-Joint Masonry Build method for the new £350,000 Berkshire home.

The Masonry Build method allows for the weatherproof shell of the house to be built very quickly.  Work can then start on the interior fit-out at the same time as the brickwork is being built up on the outside walls, shaving weeks off the build time.   This whole project was completed in less than a year.

Andrew Edwards, a partner at Revolution Homes, is a big fan of the H+H method:  “For a self-builder who wants masonry construction we only use Thin-Joint construction not traditional blockwork. In this case the Masonry House method was ideal because it offered everything the client specified: a masonry solution with excellent thermal and acoustic properties with the same [rapid] build-time as a timber frame solution”.

Aircrete blocks were used to create the ground floor, inner leaf of the exterior walls, upper floors and internal partitions. The external walls were constructed with an aircrete inner leaf and brick outer skin with 100 mm of Celotex insulation. Floors were constructed from aircrete blocks slotted into beams.

As part of the Masonry Homes Method, H+H worked with Revolution Homes to provide the contractor with wall heat loss calculations. It also advised on the accommodation of movement within the house which takes place on all new build.

The building fabric’s enhanced thermal performance enabled the house to be heated by underfloor heating using low-grade heat taken from the outside air via an air-source heat pump.
